Wantilan Bali

Tried this place over the weekend, never knew there was a balinese place around Hawthorn. The moment you get into the restaurant you feel that comfortable ambience and the classiness of it. I actually miss food in Bali so it was pretty much a good thing that i manage to find one out here in Melbourne.

 The menu

The bar and the decorations in the restaurant

The nice table setting and the menu

Ok, so we started off with drinks and the one on the right was the Es Teh while the one of the left was the Kopi Bali which in my opinion was one from a box and the other was watered down coffee.. didnt really like  it

Next up, the food!! It came pretty quickly and the first dish was the Be Celeng Guling which was Balinese suckling pig. I miss the Babi guling in Bali, this one on the other hand, although tasty but the crackling was so hard. Instead of being crispy, it felt like i was biting on a rock. and on the side was sweet potato rice which was just normal rice with sweet potato in it. Nothing really special.

Then came the Wantilan bebek goreng. This one i would recommend as it was pretty crispy and tasty. Although cant be compared to the one in Bali but for Australian standards i would say that it was pretty good especially with rice.

The gado -gado was just a simple vege dish i guess. Should have gotten the plecing kangkung instead. At least the gado gado still lived up to its expectations but nothing to shout about really.

All in all, had a pretty good meal for Aussie standards. This place is a little bit pricey but with good service and ambience it levels it out. Food wise i would say it was a decent meal but if you have never tried Balinese food before, its a good place to try it. I give Wantilan Bali a 6/10

Have a great week!!

Gypsy and Pig

So basically this is my first review after so long, so here goes...

Me and my friends went to this place called Gypsy and Pig which was in Melbourne in Hardware Lane. Apparently this shop was owned by a Japanese chef that used to work in a top class restaurant but he went for a long holiday and when he came back he decided to open up this shop.

I must say this place is abit pricey for students which is about in the range of 20-30 dollars per meal but the quality of the food is definately worth the money. The pork that is used for the dishes here are not ordinary pork but black pork or also known as kurobuta in Japanese which is prized for its juiciness, flavour and tenderness which definately what i had in the dishes i ordered here.

The setting and menu

the picture above is the picture of the chef and his assistant. This shop isnt really that big so it feels very cozy and the ambience was great. If you want to try out this place, u might wanna book in advance cause they really dont have that many sits.

The different type of sauces and the one in the winnie the pooh honey pot is the so called "nectar" for the katsu or fried pork loin

the stewed pork belly with half boiled egg. $25

The katsu / pork loin.$27 for the whole set

I would really suggest coming here if you are really into katsu. The quality is definately there and the flavours from the ones i had were just awesome!!!! i give it a 9/10.
